Hanyang University (HYU)’s External Cooperation Team (HUECT) began hosting the “Thank-You Letter Writing Program” for the “1,000 Won Breakfast” in March at the student cafeteria on the third floor of Hanyang Plaza. The program allows students to participate easily before or after breakfast and will continue during breakfast service hours. Schedules will be adjusted according to donors’ preferences.

The 1,000 Won Breakfast, a program so popular that students began lining up as early as 8 am, is a meal support initiative organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA). It aims to reduce financial burdens on university students and promote regular eating habits. Through support from the government, local authorities, the university, and alumni, students can enjoy meals worth approximately 6,000 won for just 1,000 won at the Hanyang Plaza student cafeteria.

Last year, HYU received the Grand Prize from the MAFRA in recognition of the program’s quality and stable operation. This achievement was made possible through the efforts of cafeteria staff, planners, and support from the government and local authorities. However, the program has been supported most significantly by voluntary donors.

According to Lee Ha-nul, a staff member of HUECT, the 1,000 Won Breakfast goes beyond simple meal support. It is an important welfare initiative that helps students maintain a healthy university life and focus on their academics. She explained that the program was planned to create opportunities for students to express gratitude directly, as there had been limited communication between students and donors.

A 1986 cohort who received thank-you letters shared, “We were deeply moved by the sincere gratitude conveyed through carefully written letters from the students.” They added, “Even in an era where technology is changing the world, it is these small acts of sharing that connect genuine human emotions.” They also expressed hope that this warm connection would strengthen students’ affection for their university and encourage more alumni to participate in such giving.
